I did set the callsign and ssid. I have been to the status page and neither node knows of the other one. Both nodes act like they are fully functional but they simply do not know each other.
I did see a signal level BEFORE I had the second unit for a day or so but that is no longer there.
I have looked at the "site monitor" on the laptop and both nodes are there with equal signal levels.
This brings me to a question that I didn't ask but I used the '.bin file to flash, do you also have to re-flash with the '.trx' file?

All versions of the WRT54GL (note L for Linux) work well with HSMM-MESH.
(Version 1.0 and 1.1 both work well.)

Sounds like they are working. All WRT54GL routers work well with HSMM-MESH.
You MUST initialize them with your call sign-ssid.
If you can get in to set the call sign and a different SSID for each unit, then go to the "mesh status" page and it will show you what nodes are seen. No guessing required.
Try setting your web browser to 172.27.0.1:8080 and look at the mesh status page.
If this does not get you going, provide more details and / or another question.

I just received another router yesterday and loaded MESH into it then placed it near my other
unit in hopes to get MESHing. Well they are both on the default channel, nothing other than
call sign and ssid entered. the wan led blinks acting like they are talking but ...
They both talk to the computers on the desk so I know the lan sides are working.
Any ideas??

Hello all,
I'm new to Austin. Been here 8 weeks. Love the city. Just found out about this group. I look forward to meeting up at the next meeting!

I just completed a mesh research/development project before coming out here. :) We used Batman and the VillageTelco project mesh potatos.
I like OLSR as well. Want to build an OLSR mesh. I have 4 ubiquity access points and a couple linksys access points.

Digital Tuesday -- April 19th
Ok! Now that you're done with your taxes we're having another Digital
Tuesday in the Plano area (Lucas, TX, technically).
Two items (at least) for Tuesday night:
1. Wireless access to your mesh by adding an access point, back-to-back, to a mesh node.
2. Show and Tell -- bring something digital that you've been playing, er...., working on for the rest of the crowd to see and discuss.
I will try to take video with sound of the meeting and make it available
to those wanting to see how we can mess up a perfectly good meeting. :-)

Meeting is at 7:00pm. Location is 299 Connor Ln, Lucas, TX (33.076433N,
96.573173W). Follow the driveway to the backyard gate, go around the
pool to the pool house. Our meeting is in there.

Check www.fab-corp.com and look for "pigtails" for adapter cables. Higher gain antennas are generally helpful. High gain directional antennas are common for microwave applications. Put your signal where you want it and avoid a lot of noise by looking only where the next node is located, for long hops. (miles)
For a dense mesh, omni antennas are good. (1/2 mile or so between nodes).

The radio runs, by default, in “diversity” mode, where the radio rapidly switches between the two antennas looking for the currently strongest signal “now”. That antenna will be used for TX and RX, automatically. Due to a great deal of reflection and multi-path with microwave signals, the signal at a particular antenna can vary moment to moment.
HSMM-MESH firmware, on the setup page, allows the user to set an antenna for diversity, TX or RX. For now, you should probably just leave the radio in diversity mode and it will automatically figure out which antenna to use.
Short antenna adapter cables, sometimes called “pigtails” are commonly made using LMR-100 cable, so you can route the cable in a weatherproof box. I get my pigtails from .
Keep the feed lines as short as possible. The “pros” often mount the radio on the back of the antenna. RF loss in coax at 2.4GHz is terrible, so try to keep the feed lines very short. If you mount the mesh node on a weatherproof box near the antenna, try keeping the external feed line to the antenna in the range of 3' for so. Andrews makes expensive feed line for microwave use, that will allow for longer runs, but it is very expensive, and even the pros try to avoid using it.

Is anything lost, when switching from two antennas to only one?
What about the 9dbi verticals (14" - 15" long) that are made to connect directly to the rounter?
For antennas not directly connected, does 3' or 4' cable have much loss to speak of?

Do what is needed to keep the file name the same as it is on the web page. Some browsers insist on trying to change the name. The name of the file MUST be as it is on the web page to be properly accepted for down load into the router.
All is done by making menu selections using a web browser.
Down load the firmware file, go to the web page in the router, use the selection to update firmware. When it asks for what file to load into the router, point it at the HSMM-MESH firmware file you down loaded off the web page. It should be loaded into the router. I downloaded WRT54G V4 with no issue. It opens as a media audio file (VLC player). Should I save it as a different file type? Is it all done in an internet browser?

I think you are looking at a WRT54GS v4, not a WRT54G v4. In any event it will work fine with HSMM-MESH. SpeedBoost was an all software technique to send more data ONLY to other Linksys SpeedBoost systems. There was no special hardware used to implement SpeedBoost.
